Project America Run: Remembering Their Sacrifice

One Life. One Flag. One Mile.

Lyle's flag was placed on the corner of 5th St. & Hwy. 14 today.

On May 1st 2010, Mike Ehredt, a retired Postal Clerk and Army Veteran, touched the wheel of his jogger stroller in the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, OR and began an epic 4514 mile journey across the country to Honor and Remember Service Members lost in Iraq. He is currently placing flags that hold a yellow ribbon bearing the Name, Rank, Service, Age and Hometown of those whose dreams and ambitions were taken so quickly from us. The flags are being placed each mile along the roads he is traveling in reverse chronological order by date of death, till the very last flag is placed on the shores of the Atlantic in Rockland, Maine.

This is a personal tribute, a silent memorial for those who have served with dignity and honor and whose sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Haunting the Halls

Mid-Columbia Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for the second Lyle Habitat House. They will be accepting applications from residents of their service area which includes Hood River, Odell, Parkdale, Underwood, Husum, White Salmon, Bingen, Snowden, and Lyle, but as the land Habitat owns is in Lyle, they want to assure that Lyle residents know about it.

At the building site, on Washington between 4^th & 5^th streets, there are brochures in a plastic box on a pole that explain the program and criteria for being a Habitat partner in buying a house and contact information. Applications will be accepted until June 30 at which time they will begin the selection process that takes a couple of months.

The volunteers are at the building site on Friday, Saturday and Monday. They have a Family Selection Committee of 6 volunteers, three of them are from the Lyle area.

First Habitat House in Klickitat County

Pastor Earl D. Lane of the Lyle United Methodist Church offered daily lunches to the all volunteer crew building the first Habitat for Humanity House in Klickitat County. Volunteers came from all over the U.S. (including Lyle itself) to frame the home and ready it for the next stage. During their work week, the UMC Ladies served the crew of 17 to 24 who were very grateful for having a warm, comfortable place to relax and enjoy a bountiful, nourishing meal that restored their energy and prepared them to face their project for the rest of the day. Linda Scott and her daughter Bethany will be the owners of the home upon its completion.

Free Public Workshop

Workshop to Focus on Using Broadband to Expand Rural Job Opportunities

The Klickitat Horizons Telecommunications Committee is holding a free public workshop in White Salmon to discuss how expanding broadband Internet access can be used to create job opportunities in rural communities. The workshop will focus on the opportunities the information-based, global economy provides for rural job creation.

The "Rural Job Opportunities in the New Economy" workshop will be held on Thursday, April 8, from 1 until 4 pm at the Pioneer Center, 501 N.E. Washington in White Salmon.

The workshop will feature an update on efforts to bring broader Internet access to the Klickitat/Skamania region, a local panel discussion of successes in using broadband communications to generate jobs, and a community discussion of what the next steps should be for job creation and other uses as better broadband access comes to the region. Presenters include Ken Levy, 4-Tell, John Hardham, Light Wave Communications, Tim Shatraw, Sacred Heart Saddlery, Jeff Nicol, Privacy Ready, Chris Dukelow, Giant Campus, Jerry Lewis, White Salmon School District, Linda Williams, WSU Extension Klickitat County and Monica Babine WSU Extension Division of Governmental Studies and Services.

Since 2006, nine communities in Klickitat and Skamania counties have participated in the Horizons Program, a community leadership development program administered by Washington State University Extension, aimed at identifying and addressing the causes of poverty in small, rural communities. To date, 40 rural communities in Washington State have participated in Horizons.

Through the Horizons Program, residents in the Klickitat/Skamania area identified job creation as a top community priority, and cited the lack of access to adequate broadband telecommunications service as a limiting factor in creating new jobs, and access to higher education and government services.

As a result, the community-based Klickitat Horizons Telecommunications Committee formed with the goal of making broadband service available for all who want it at an affordable rate.

The committee's efforts led to inclusion in a multi-county proposal through local Internet service provider Sawtooth Technologies and NoaNet that resulted in an $84.3 million federal economic recovery grant for the project, including funding for a $3.7 million fiber-optic infrastructure investment as well as community planning, outreach and training in Klickitat and Skamania counties.

Pavilion Progress

Lyle is making progress on the construction of its new pavilion. Materials for the project were purchased with the 2009 EDA grant, awarded through Klickitat county. All labor is completely volunteer. Come by and watch the fabrication process, or better yet, join in and help build a portion of it.

Pavilion Construction Begins

Eagle Spotting at Klickitat-Balfour Day Use Park

Experience an educational winter field outing for bald eagles at Balfour Park. Cathy Flick will come armed with a spotting scope, give a life-history overview, and introduce you to specific year-round pairs in the area. Part of the outing will involve a short walk. Bring binoculars, or a spotting scope, and dress warmly. There are toilet facilities at the Park.

On September 3rd over 50 participants gathered at Lyle's new Activity Center for a chance to share their community's Horizons success stories to Northwest Area Foundation (NWAF) and Washington State University delegates.

Contributors from both Klickitat and Skamania counties attended the meeting that highlighted each community's grassroots projects. The Horizons communities in partnership with WSU Extension have been working together with funding from the NWAF to help reduce poverty and increase prosperity in rural communities throughout both counties.

Many outstanding programs have been initiated that range in theme and issue, but all have contributed to improving the quality of life for the people living in our area.

The campaign to preserve the old elementary school building and park in order to convert it into Lyle's new Activity Center was showcased at the event as one of Lyle's current Horizons efforts.

A Remembrance with Honor

Two completely different backgrounds and two men who held the same reverence for the Klickitat River and Mother Nature's offerings were honored by family and friends August 27 at the Balfour Klickitat Trail.

Yakama leader, elder, statesman, broker and chairman of the Yakama Nation, the late William F. Yallup, Sr. and Glen Chilcutt, father and grandfather will be remembered as men who held the highest esteem for the river and it's bounty.

The trail winds by the river on the west side where hikers can now sit and rest at the bench sites overlooking the landscape. The Klickitat flows into the Columbia River at Lyle in the gorge.

The benches were blessed by Yakama religious leaders and prayers were given for the families. Chilcutt and Yallup both have their names on the resting back of each bench. On the first bench the Chilcutt family requested on the plaque the words: "Teach a child to fish." And both are inscribed with "In memory of."

"This was his favorite place. His family knew he was at peace when at this place," said 90-year old Pearl Chilcutt. The Chilcutt family included children and grandchildren.

"The people who respect the environment and hike here will have a place to sit and rest," said Martha Yallup, wife of the late Yallup, Sr. "We fished in this river. It's a special place." Yallup along with her family members, tribal leaders and friends gathered with the Chilcutt family afterwards for a luncheon at the local Lions Club.

OLESS (Old Lyle Elementary School Supporters)

Supporters of the Old Lyle Elementary School Building and Park will hold their next OLESS meeting on August 3, at 7:00 p.m. at the Elementary School.

Community input is desired on how to transform the building into a Community Activity Center for Lyle residents.

Come and share your ideas and suggestions.

Volunteer(s) needed

I need a volunteer (or 2) to help me remove punture vine (goat heads) from the old elementary school property in Lyle. This multi-year project (get rid of that obnoxious vine, started about 3 years ago) has been successfull but there are mature plants down there that need to be pulled ASAP. Also, we need to do a site survey so the county or school can do some selective herbicide spraying down there next week. The more manual pulling/surveying we do, the less spray is needed. This old school property was completely infested a few years ago, so we have come a long way in managing this pest!

I'd like to do it early Sat AM (7/11). Call me if you want to help me for one hour of work. 509-365-6828...Lisa Conway.

Puncutre Vine (Tribulus terrestris) will flatten any and all bike and stroller tires, can be transported back home via car tires and is terrible to step on. Please help me fight this obnoxious creature!

Lyle's Horizons Steering Team Meeting Minutes July 9, 2009

Attendees: Linda Williams, Bob Hansen, Lori Hull, Sherri Starkin, Vern Harpole, Barbara Sexton, Marcia Buser (notetaker). Not present: Mindy Robison, Mildred Lykens, Julie Larson

Purpose: 1^st meeting for Horizons Phase III: Community Visioning. During this phase, the Steering Team will involve the community in developing a Strategic Poverty Action Plan. This will involve surveying community members and sharing the results at a Horizons Community Celebration.

Minutes:

1. Discussion & Decisions:

a. Visioning Process:

Must involve at least 15% of the community. We will do a door-to- door survey, and include not only town, but Old Hwy 8, Canyon Road, Centerville Hwy, Hwy 142 to a designated mileage from Lyle.

Survey should include about 5 questions that are relevant to our Horizons projects.

We will need volunteers to survey assigned areas & handout flyers for Horizons Community Celebration (item 1.c.). Survey plan to be developed at next meeting July 14^th – see at end of minutes. May include doing a prize drawing raffle for those completing the survey.

Include other active Horizons participants to help out with survey. They are also welcome to attend Steering Team meetings as non-voting members.

b. Strategic Poverty Action Plan:

Must be submitted by September 1^st. Since we are already doing so many of the items, and more, that came out of our Study Circles and Community Forum, we just need to capture them in a plan that includes:

§ Action plan description (What’s the project & why its important)

§ How will this address poverty?

§ Who is involved & their contact information

§ Action steps, including who is responsible and due dates

§ Indicators of success

The Steering Team will write this plan together via email – see related action items below.

c. Horizons Community Celebration:

Planned for Friday, August 14 at 5:30 PM – see related action items below & agenda for next Steering Team Meeting July 14 at end of minutes.

2. Action Items from this Meeting:

a. Visioning Process:

ü Linda – send examples of other communities’ surveys

ü All Steering Team members – submit ideas for survey to Marcia

ü Marcia – draft survey based on ideas submitted

ü Marcia – check on availability of a good county map to use for survey assignments

b. Strategic Poverty Action Plan:

ü Linda – Provide update on budget for Phase III activities (estimated $1500)

ü Linda – investigate setting up workshops for us on grant writing & fundraising, and other possible workshops.

ü Marcia – draft template for plan

ü All Steering Team – help finalize after survey results are compiled.

c. Horizons Community Celebration:

ü Vern – approach Tap Room, Lyle Hotel, Country Café about catering August 14 Celebration

ü Lori – draft flyer for celebration

ü Barbara – check with nephew for live music

d. Other Action Items:

ü Bob - contact Gorge Net for possible wi-fi hot spot at school & report at OLESS meeting on July 13.

ü Lori – make flyers & post for OLESS meeting on Monday July 13.

ü Vern – approach Lion’s Club to see if he can give updates on Horizons activities and create a better partnership with them

ü Linda – send out information on upcoming food preservation class (?July 27?)

ü Marcia – will serve as point of contact for Steering Team

Horizons Steering Committee Meets

This is the initial gathering of the newly selected steering committee that will help guide Lyle through its Visioning Phase (Phase III) of the 18 month program.

There are single and multiple sales throughout Lyle and a concentration of sales in Lyle Park Place, 3rd and Highway 14 in beautiful downtown Lyle. You can find a Map Program of all towns and sales in Klickitat County at the Lyle Historical Bridges Museum booth in the park. We'll see you in Lyle on Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th, 2009, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Film Crew Comes to Lyle

The Cross Currents film crew will be interviewing local residents for a video series that centers around conversations with the people of the Gorge. The producer and director are seen in the above photo shooting footage of the Columbia River People on Lyle Point. They will be at the May 15th River Peoples Cultural Exchange with a crew of about 15 capturing the celebration event.

Michael Friend is an independent writer/producer of documentary and commercial films and videos. He is also a writer and producer of print and web projects.

John Hardham is the owner and creative director of Light Wave Communications a Columbia Gorge media production company.
