What's Happening in Lyle
November 13 & 14 (Friday & Saturday) Lyle Ladies Holiday Bazaar & OLESS Taco Bar at the Lyle Activity Center (Old Lyle Elementary School), both days 9:00 AM – 4:00 OM. Don’t miss it! Taco Bar will feature both meat and vegetarian options. There will be several raffles, including for a beautiful, locally-made quilt. November 13 & 14 (Friday & Saturday) Pretenders live dinner theatre presents Happy Anniversary Angel 7:00 PM at the Lyle Grange. $25 includes lasagna dinner by Beneventis. Tickets available at Country Café, Beneventi’s and Klindts bookstore. We will be planning a May 1 “Tour de Fleur” wildflower hiking/biking/community event. November 20 & 21st (Monday) Lyle Middle School and High School Drama Presents ... “Trouble at the Talent Show” at 7:00 PM at the Dallesport Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room An Audience Participation Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. $5 with proceeds, including donations, to the Lyle High School Senior Class of 201. Tickets available at Lyle High School or the Dallesport Elementary School. Dinner: Lasagna w/soup, salad, bread. November 23 (Monday) Lyle Community Council Meeting at 7:00 PM at the Lion's Community Center. Full agenda will be posted at the Post Office prior to the meeting. Elections will be held at this meeting. November 26-29 (Thursday – Sunday) Lyle Wineries Food Drive! Donate a non-perishable food item when you visit & the tasting fee will be waived at these wineries on Thanksgiving weekend: COR Cellars, Domaine Pouillon, Jacob Williams, Memaloose & Syncline. All food items will be donated to the Washington Gorge Action Program in Bingen, WA to help those most in need in our community this holiday season. November 30 (Monday) OLESS (Old Lyle Elementary School Supporters) Meeting at 7:00 PM at the Lyle Activity Center (Old Lyle Elementary School). Please join us! There is much to be done. Great omelets or ham & eggs and all the pancakes you can eat. December 20 (Sunday) 2009 Lyle Christmas Bird Count. Volunteers are needed to count birds and record species around Lyle for the 13th annual Christmas count that is one of 2500 Christmas counts happening nation-wide. Lyle Hosts Foundation Event
Contributors from both Klickitat and Skamania counties attended the meeting that highlighted each community's grassroots projects. The Horizons communities in partnership with WSU Extension have been working together with funding from the NWAF to help reduce poverty and increase prosperity in rural communities throughout both counties.
Many outstanding programs have been initiated that range in theme and issue, but all have contributed to improving the quality of life for the people living in our area.
The campaign to preserve the old elementary school building and park in order to convert it into Lyle's new Activity Center was showcased at the event as one of Lyle's current Horizons efforts.

A Remembrance with Honor

Two completely different backgrounds and two men who held the same reverence for the Klickitat River and Mother Nature's offerings were honored by family and friends August 27 at the Balfour Klickitat Trail.
Yakama leader, elder, statesman, broker and chairman of the Yakama Nation, the late William F. Yallup, Sr. and Glen Chilcutt, father and grandfather will be remembered as men who held the highest esteem for the river and it's bounty.
The trail winds by the river on the west side where hikers can now sit and rest at the bench sites overlooking the landscape. The Klickitat flows into the Columbia River at Lyle in the gorge.
The benches were blessed by Yakama religious leaders and prayers were given for the families. Chilcutt and Yallup both have their names on the resting back of each bench. On the first bench the Chilcutt family requested on the plaque the words: "Teach a child to fish." And both are inscribed with "In memory of."
"This was his favorite place. His family knew he was at peace when at this place," said 90-year old Pearl Chilcutt. The Chilcutt family included children and grandchildren.
"The people who respect the environment and hike here will have a place to sit and rest," said Martha Yallup, wife of the late Yallup, Sr. "We fished in this river. It's a special place." Yallup along with her family members, tribal leaders and friends gathered with the Chilcutt family afterwards for a luncheon at the local Lions Club.

Volunteer(s) needed
I need a volunteer (or 2) to help me remove punture vine (goat heads) from the old elementary school property in Lyle. This multi-year project (get rid of that obnoxious vine, started about 3 years ago) has been successfull but there are mature plants down there that need to be pulled ASAP. Also, we need to do a site survey so the county or school can do some selective herbicide spraying down there next week. The more manual pulling/surveying we do, the less spray is needed. This old school property was completely infested a few years ago, so we have come a long way in managing this pest!
I'd like to do it early Sat AM (7/11). Call me if you want to help me for one hour of work. 509-365-6828...Lisa Conway.
Puncutre Vine (Tribulus terrestris) will flatten any and all bike and stroller tires, can be transported back home via car tires and is terrible to step on. Please help me fight this obnoxious creature!
